MOTOCICLE & SCOOTERS TIRES - ALL BRANDS

Different types of motorcycles require different types of tires for different types of uses. The tires are one of the most important elements of the motorcycle and are highly responsible for the safety of the driver and passenger. It is the only element that maintains contact with the ground and it is worth remembering that adhesion is circulating on only two wheels is a fundamental factor.

There are different types of tires depending on the motorcycle or what you decide to do with it, each with a task and a rigorous development process to get the best performance. Below is a list of the most popular that can be found in the market.

ACCORDING TO HARDNESS

One of the main differences that can be seen between several motorcycle tires is the hardness of the rubber. The composition of this is one of the factors that determines the adhesion of the tire. In general, you can distinguish between tires:

# 1 HARD: A “hard” tire, if it is at the right temperature, can offer as much or more hysteresis than another, that even and be softer than a gum, it is working too cold. Controlling the thermal range is the responsibility of the housing, which is the set of elements that give it structural strength.

# 2 MEDIA: The middle tires are manufactured so that there is a balance between grip and wear. They are very typical and highly recommended.

# 3 WHITE: The softer and more elastic the chemical mixture that makes up the rubber, the more hysteresis it offers, and therefore, it offers better adhesion values. The problem is that, as a rule, greater elasticity, lower friction resistance and therefore greater wear of the tire. This relationship known to all, which is inverse correspondence, suffers serious temperature disorders, aggravating premature wear at a higher temperature.

The choice between one type or another is determined taking into account the terrain through which it is to be circulated and the use that will be given. Thus, although a soft rubber tends to offer greater adhesion than a hard one, its use depends on the terrain for which it will be used, since, for example, tires used in dry or stony terrain must be hard, while for cross or trial is preferable to be soft.

The hardness of the tires, in addition to determining the adhesion to the surface on which it is circulated, is also related to the surface of the tires. Thus, hard tires usually have more drawings than soft tires and therefore are the most suitable for wet terrain because they maintain driver safety.

ACCORDING TO THE STRUCTURE

Depending on the tire manufacturing, they can generally be of 2 types:

# 1 DIAGONAL: The fabric of the layers is placed diagonally at an angle of about 40 degrees.

# 2 RADIALS: In its construction the layers of which are composed in a straight line are placed on top of each other using an angle of intersection of the 90 degree cords.

The difference in the type of construction lies in the rigidity of the tire and its ability to adapt to the ground. The radials, have shown over the years enormous advantages over the conventional ones, displacing them almost totally from the market and leaving them only for very specific uses.

ACCORDING TO THE USAGE

# 1 WITH NAILS: Nailed tires are exclusive tires for use on snow and ice. They can be off-road or road tires with small metal tips with which to get grip even on frozen surfaces. They are difficult to find tires and you can also buy the metal tips separately to fit them on our conventional tires, tires with a lot of block in this case.

# 2 SPORTS: Sports tires are tires created for the general public who are looking for a high performance tire with great road grip. It is composed of especially soft components but that need a lower temperature than the circuit tires to work properly. They are tires with more or less drawing, but never slicks (smooth), and they can also be composed of different strips of different hardnesses, the central tread being usually the hardest and strongest and the softest sides with the highest adhesion. Being composed of soft materials its life is short and the little drawing does not make them especially effective with water in case of rain.

# 3 WINTER: Winter tires are very specific and hard to find tires. They are oriented to hard winters where snow is easily present and the asphalt temperature is really low. They offer a very special drawing composed of deep plugs and a fully grooved surface to easily evacuate water and offer maximum grip even on slippery surfaces.

# 4 OFF-ROAD: Off-road tires are specific tires for enduro bikes or motocross bikes. They are tires of marked studs to achieve maximum penetration on soft terrain and designed to work at low pressures. They are tires for exclusive off-road use because on asphalt their grip is low and they would also degrade quickly.

# 5 SLICKS: Slicks tires are tires that have no drawing and are completely smooth. They are used exclusively in competition, to circulate within a closed circuit, and are designed to degrade in a short period of time in exchange for offering maximum adhesion. They are composed of very soft tires and the same tire can be composed of strips of different hardness to offer greater grip or greater durability, depending on the circuit. They are tires designed to reach very high temperatures, operate at low pressures and withstand great effort. They have more flexible housings adapted to the weight of the motorcycle. Slicks tires are not suitable for use on public roads.

# 6 TOURING: Touring tires are tires developed to offer a good grip as well as a good resistance with the passage of miles, and thus offer especially long lives. Touring bikes usually ride this type of tire. They are tires that offer a wide strip of friction and need a lower temperature to offer their maximum performance, so they are quickly at their best. They usually offer a surface with a lot of drawing so even with rain continue to offer a safe behavior.

# 7 TRAIL: Trail tires, designed for trail bikes, are also known as mixed tires. They are tires with a very deep drawing and a great relief to get a good grip on both asphalt roads and dirt roads. They work at a relatively low temperature and have a great longevity being composed of generally hard materials. They offer a versatile behavior but on asphalt their grip is lower than other specifically road tires, such as sports or touring.

# 8 TRIAL: Trial tires are tires developed for that discipline with trial bikes. They are tires with numerous studs and designed to work with very low air pressures. They are soft to offer a great grip on all types of terrain, be it land, stones or water, and their housings are easily deformable and very square.

# 9 SCOOTER: These are tires created for scooters or megascooters. They are usually of a smaller diameter and there are sports, city or even touring. They are tires that offer their best behavior without reaching high temperatures and their lifespan is usually relatively long.

# 10 SUPERMOTARD: Supermotor tires are competition tires and designed to be used on supermotard motorcycles. There are more or less drawing and even slicks. They work at very high temperatures and have a very rounded throat to get a lot of grip on their flanks.

TIRE CODE

When we look at the dimensions of the tires, we rarely know how to interpret what the numbers that form them correspond to, with the following explanation each of the mentioned characteristics will be clearer.

We start from the most normal road tire on most motorcycles and that corresponds to the front wheel.

120/70 ZR17 M 58W T

120: It is the first digit of the code and refers to the width of the section of the tire expressed in millimeters.

70: Express the relationship between height and width. In this case the height will be 70% of the width, that is 60mm.

Z: This letter corresponds to those of a code that indicates the maximum speed at which this tire can be rolled. Sometimes this letter is printed after the maximum tire load. The letters corresponding to each speed are:

Maximum speed code for tires

Speed     Code     Speed     Code     Speed     Code

    J         100 km/h     P     150 km/h     U     200 km/h

    K        110 km/h     Q     160 km/h     H    210 km/h

    L        120 km/h     R     170 km/h     V     240 km/h

    M       130 km/h     S     180 km/h     ZR   270 km/h

    N       140 km/h     T      190 km/h     W     more than 270 km/h

A: This number indicates that the tire has a radial carcass (structure) that provides advantages over a diagonal carcass (indicated by a D).

17: inner diameter of the tire, expressed in inches (ex: 17 ”= 431.8 mm). It must correspond to the diameter of the tire.

M: Which indicates that it belongs to motorcycle or C for the rest of vehicles.

58: Maximum load index (ex: 58 = 236 kg).

W: speed index. It is the maximum speed at which the tire is approved when it is subjected to its maximum load index.

TL: Tire with air chamber and T for tires without air chamber.
