When to change only two tires

Where to mount new (or less worn) tires at the rear or at the front?

There are two theories about it:

1. Positioning on the rear axle: It is more difficult for the driver to control the loss of grip of the rear wheels. Fitting new tires on the rear axle makes it possible to balance the grip between the two axles and thus increase your safety: by operating the steering wheel, the front axle is controlled, even if the grip is weaker, while the new tires provide optimal grip on the rear axle.

2. Fitting on the front axle: For us, we always recommend fitting new or better condition tires on the front axle. In this way we always ensure that we can control the vehicle, and that it responds to changes in the direction of travel. With this, we could more easily overcome obstacles that arise until we can stop the vehicle to replace the tires in bad condition.

It is important that when you change two wheels on your vehicle, you ask your workshop manager why one of the tires has worn faster than the other, since it may be a consequence of one of the axles not being properly balanced and the parallelism of the car is deviated. Balancing the car is not a problem, your workshop can correct it without much difficulty.

In2tires recommends not waiting for the tire to show extreme wear, as hydroplaning is much more frequent in the event of rain. Keep in mind the recommended limits of 2.0 millimeters - or 3.0 millimeters for a wide tire.

Maximum tolerable wear:

All tires have a witness in the grooves that indicate the maximum tolerable wear. "The 1.6 millimeter wear indicator indicates the legal minimum rubber height."

When to change all four tires

If your four tires eventually wear out at the same time, you have more flexibility when choosing new tires.

If you are satisfied with your used tires, you can choose them. Otherwise, if you want you can choose and change for another profile or another brand, you will have to find out if they can be adapted to your vehicle. This way you can choose tires that are stronger, more comfortable, more efficient, depending on the criteria you are looking for and the way you drive.
